Are Hurricane Zones Flooded By Reporters More Than Water In Recent Years By: Rachel Yoshida
There has been so much attention given to the coming of hurricane Gustav. For well over a week there has been little else discussed in weather reports except the fact that Gustav could possibly rival other oat hurricanes like Katrina, Andrew, and Camille. Much preparation was made to be as ready as possible for this next big one. Buses and trains were set up well ahead of time for evacuees that had no way to get out on their own. New Orleans especially wanted to make sure there was no repeat of the chaos that occurred during and after Katrina.
As was expected, Hurricane Gustav did cause a considerable amount of damage, but still nothing even comparable to Katrina. There was some flooding and as the remnants of the system moves northward it will still dump a goodly amount of rain in other areas that were not in the coastal regions. Much of any additional flooding will be caused by the rainfall, but flooding from the surge of ocean water was limited.
The dreaded and much worried about levees around New Orleans held fast for the most part and the biggest damage done by them was from water surging over the tops of the connecting canals. This did cause some localized flooding, but again, nothing like the devastating flooding caused by Katrina. There were some homes severely damaged by the strong winds and flood waters, but the loss of life has been few so far.
Probably one of the biggest floods that took place during Gustav that caused no damage at all was the flood of reporters that descended on the Gulf Coast region to cover the event. While all the other local people were scrambling to get out before Gustav came on shore, scores of reporters were quickly setting up there cameras and satellite equipment filled vehicles to be able to give us a blow by blow, no pun intended, account of all that happened as it occurred.
What makes these gung ho individuals want to place their lives in jeopardy just to deliver a report live when they could so easily end up dead? It is really ridiculous. We all sit on pins and needles just waiting to hear what is going on, but should there not be a less dangerous way to get word than these people risking life and limb just to gain those few precious moments in the lime light? Do they not realize that if it is necessary to be tethered to a pole and dodge huge chunks of flying debris to be able to stand and deliver a report that the smartest thing they can do is be somewhere else?
It is almost laughable at the lengths the media will go to present the fastest coverage and the most dangerous coverage even if they are placing themselves in serious peril. It does not really show how brave they are, but actually just how stupid people will be to get a little recognition.
