Disease Could Run Rampant In India Due To Un-Seasonal Flooding By: Rachel Yoshida
While here in America we have been so wrapped up in our own recent events such as tropical storm Fay, hurricane Gustav, and the coming of possible hurricane Hannah, we have probably not given much thought to the hundreds of thousand of people in India that have been left homeless because of the recent flooding that have taken place over there. It does not mean that we are unsympathetic to their situation it is just hard to focus on tragedies in the rest of the world when we have so much going on right in our own back yard.
It is not uncommon for India to experience river flooding every year because of monsoon rains. They are usually always bad, but some years are worse than others. These river floods wash out roads and bridges and leave thousands upon thousands stranded and homeless. This year western and northern states in India have been affected the most. The time period for these horrible monsoon rains can usually last from June through September.
People that have their homes flooded or washed away have to make do as best they can by setting up temporary camps to live in. These are some of the lucky ones because it has been reported that as many as 400,000 thousand or more are still in need of being rescued. Since a large portion of Bihar is underwater, there are at least 550,000 people displaced from this area alone and as many as 60,000 people in and around Nepal had their homes destroyed.
When there is devastation to people on this kind of scale, there is bound to be more problems to come. Anytime there are thousands of people living in makeshift dwellings where there is not clean water and no facilities for cooking and bathrooms, it can be a terrible breeding ground for disease. As clean as people try to be, there will still be outbreaks of things like diarrhea and other illnesses. There is no way this can be avoided when all the nearby water sources have been inundated with dirty flood water.
Along with diarrhea, pneumonia, fevers, cholera, and encephalitis are also major concerns for these flood victims. It is so important that help arrive for them soon. The medicines, water, and food they need will be necessary to help them survive and prevent the diseases from rapidly spreading and causing even more deaths that have already been claimed by the floods themselves.
