Eating Food That Has Mold Can Be Good Or Bad By: Rachel Yoshida
In the majority of households that have a bunch of kids running around, you usually do not have to worry very much about food going bad. Kids can sometimes be big eaters especially when they reach the age of 10 or so. It can be difficult to keep enough food in the house, much less having to worry about throwing anything out. There are times though when certain foods can reach a certain point and you might not be too sure about whether or not you should go ahead and throw it out.
For families that have to stay on a fairly strict budget, the thought of throwing out food unnecessarily is just not done. When it comes to eating bread that is a little stale or cutting off a moldy spot on some, a lot of people think it is better to go ahead and eat it rather than throw it away. When is something too moldy or too stale to eat? No one wants to eat anything that will make them sick, so how do you know.
Well, common sense should tell you the difference with most things. When mold begins to grow on things, it is for a reason. It means that it is not really fresh any longer, except for certain cheeses that can be made with internal mold or a moldy skin. While eating something with mold on it will not likely kill you, it can make you sick. For people who might be allergic to mold, it could be severe. The best precaution is to just not eat anything moldy.
Children sometimes do not pay that much attention to food items that have gone bad, so it is important for the adults in the home to keep a check on the items in or out of the refrigerator. Make sure that the food in the refrigerator has not expired and that breads, cakes, muffins, or other such items do not have mold.
It can be difficult to keep a clean kitchen with a large family, but it is important. Always keep a bacteria killing cleaner or wipes in the kitchen where they can be used by everyone. Teach the kids to wash their hands with soap before getting into foods that, like the bread bag or cookie jar. This will keep from spreading germs to other members of the family when they go into the same food products later.
